New Content, New Schedule, and a New Podcast Format for the Bitches

New Content, New Schedule, and a New Podcast Format for the Bitches

Hi everyone! It’s been a long time since we gave you an update on what’s happening behind the scenes at Bitches Get Riches. Probably because…

  1. We assume you kinda don’t care.
  2. We avoid talking about our plans publicly, because our follow-through often sucks, and we prefer not to be held accountable for that.
FINE, I will publicly commit to a new podcast format. Is my self-effacing too honest? Check yes or no. [ ] Yes
[ ] No

That said, we’ve made some big decisions we think you’ll want to hear about! We’re switching up our content schedule AND rolling out a new podcast format. We’re doing this because we want to make our work as valuable and accessible as we possibly can. So let me take you through what’s changing!

New topics on the horizon

Recently, we did a month of articles themed around disability. Our readers have begged us for this information, yet we always avoided it. As writers, the three-way intersection of High Stakes Avenue, Research Intensive Road, and Big Bummer Boulevard is a very scary place to hang out. We often felt we weren’t ready to go there.

Those disability articles were among the most difficult we’ve tackled for Bitches Get Riches. We needed extra time, energy, and support to see them through.

… But surprise! In spite of all that, we ultimately LOVED writing them!

We run Bitches Get Riches because we want to change people’s lives for the better by giving them information and perspectives they need, but are rarely taught. We believe that if people have honest, easy-to-understand explanations of how this complicated shit works, people can make the best decisions for themselves. They can also take that knowledge back into their communities, democratize financial education, and build wealth equitably together. That’s what feels like our true calling!

Hope you like the new podcast format. Also, does anyone read the alt jokes? Check yes or no. [ ] Yes
[ ] No

If we’re serious about that mission—and we are, it’s literally the ONLY thing we’re serious about—we need to adjust how we do a few things.

A new content schedule to match

A key change is that we need to give greater space to our writing process.

This feels kinda inevitable. After eight years of publishing articles, there aren’t many “quick and easy” topics left to cover. (Though they still exist! Pantry staples costs less in the Mexican aisle of the grocery store, tell your friends!) So we’re trying something different.

Instead of aiming for a new article every week, we’ll aim for every-other week. This will enable us to dig deep and offer our sordid insights into tricky topics we’d otherwise have to eschew. As we always have, we may adjust that frequency up or down depending on the complexity of what we’re working on.

To be transparent, it will also better accommodate my changing needs as I work on getting my autoimmune disorder diagnosed and under control! Navigating the American healthcare system, while teaching others how to navigate the American financial system, despite brain fog so thick I can’t remember what I just said, has been uhhhhh… what? I deeply appreciate the grace of your realistic expectations of me during this time.

You: Aw, good to see you’re going easier on yourselves!
Us: What? No! We have Advanced Catholic Guilt and it’s comorbid with our Eldest Daughteritis. We’ll find a way to turn less work for ourselves into MORE WORK FOR OURSELVES!

That’s right! We’re also repurposing that time to implement an important new accessibility feature. Which is a convenient segue into our next topic: our podcast!

A new podcast format

We’ve released four seasons of the Bitches Get Riches podcast. The format has always centered on answering random reader questions with our inimitable mix of authoritative explaininess and chatty distractibility. We still love that format. We have a great time doing it.

But we’re going to give it a rest for now, and try out a new podcast format.

Many fans have told us it’s a struggle to read long-form articles. We know that a high word count is a barrier to entry to some who might otherwise benefit from the information within. We could respond by making our articles much shorter and simpler… but we don’t wanna! If we optimized all of our bad jokes and weird tangents and tortured metaphors out of our writing, what’s left that’s—y’know—fun?

There’s a popular hot take going around that nobody wants long, in-depth content anymore. We know this isn’t true. I mean, millions of people watched a four-hour review of a defunct themed hotel they never visited. Checkmate, haters!

I have to put the words NEW PODCAST FORMAT in this alt text because if I don't, our little SEO tool will scream at me and throw things.

We think the real problem is that modern life pressures us to optimize our extremely limited free time. Reading demands one’s time and full attention, which are two of life’s most precious resources.

Which is why we’re thinking about listening in a new way.

Moving forward, we’re going to try publishing new articles in readable AND listenable formats. They’ll appear concurrently here, in our podcast feed, and on our YouTube channel. The content will be the same, so you can choose the format that works best for you. A slower publication schedule will help us make this possible.

Do you love the convenience of “reading” while you run errands, do chores, and lay inertly on the couch doomscrolling through Russian propaganda? If so, subscribe to Bitches Get Riches on YouTube or in the podcast feed of your favorite listening app and we shall happily oblige!

If you have opinions on the new podcast format, we want to hear from you

I want to emphasize that this is an experiment.

Ultimately we want to let our readers guide us. We’re making informed guesses about what we think you might want. You can help by telling us directly if we’re getting hotter or colder.

Although we can’t respond to everything everywhere, we read all of your comments. If this change is everything you ever wanted and more, tell us! If you aren’t digging it, just say so. Either way, we’re listening. Comment below, DM us on social media, or message us directly via Patreon. (Remember, you can join our Patreon community without paying for a membership now!)

We also look at all of our numbers. If the new podcast format of audio versions of articles appeal to you, listen to them! Share them! We’ll see your engagement and know we’re going in the right direction.

All of this work is made possible through the support of our Patreon donor community. Bitches Get Riches is a labor of love, but it is a labor. We’re deeply appreciative of the amazing readers who’ve stepped up to pay us for those efforts. We regularly pepper our donors with questions about which formats they like and want to see more. We look to them to guide us. If we’ve helped you achieve greater stability, please consider paying it forward on Patreon.

We’ll be back shortly with a new text article, plus an episode in our new podcast format. And we look forward to hearing what you think!

That’s it for now. With abundant love—Bitches out!

I'm sorry but why are these people filmed in green screen mansions! They live in real mansions! I NEED ANSWERS.

  1. This makes a lot of sense! I prefer reading over audio or video, but I know I don’t speak for everyone. It seems like the best use of your deep-dive energy to share your research and knowledge in 3 formats to appeal to your different readers/listeners/watchers.

  2. I’m a ContraPoints girlie, so I love long-form everything. 😉 For me, it’s really a matter of what you can do without feeling too -ergh, no- about it. Don’t burn out on our account!

  3. I’m a long form reader as well. I’ve discontinued following several sources that I really liked when they switched to podcast format, so I really appreciate that you are retaining the written format.

  4. Echoing the other comments, I want to thank you for keeping the written format while adding the others! Reading is the absolute best way for me to retain information (and, honestly, audio and video information are not engaging to me.) I have always appreciated podcast transcripts and I look forward to more of those, while also appreciating that you are making the other formats available for people who need those! Kudos on the thought put into it. And best wishes on the health journey.
